10th Invitational Championships

W.r.t. our recent championships - the event went off rather well - we did finish an hour late, but other than that, I think it was a super event. With a tournament of such a magnitude, what was refreshing is that we had no hassles even though we had 17 other dojo taking part. The only problem we had is that one or two of the clubs entered their students incorrectly which meant my ladies had to redo many drawsheets which contributed in us finishing later.

Other than that, it was a major financial success. We consider our championships as fund raisers so as not to tax our members with other fundraisers. We produced a 22 page A4 (double sided) tournament brochure which had the following : 10 full page adds, 6 Half Page adds and 20 quarter page adds. All the adds contributed significantly to our income. Our medals which cost R4700,00 was sponsored (sponsor had their name on the back of the medal). The Tuck Shop did R4000,00 in trade (must still work out the profits), the Apparel (200 T-shirts and 250 Headbands) was also sponsored.

Other than that there was the Gate fee and the Competitor Entry which was a minimum of R25 and we had over 400 entries. Added up, it is really Cool. On Thursday we will do a exact breakdown of costs and expenditure, but it is apparent that we made a HUGE Profit.

I have to admit that I had very little sleep the week before the event. I did the artwork and layout of the brochure with the assistance of one of my black belts. I saw sponsors, etc. which further took up my time. The entries and drawsheets was done by two of my female Black Belts (Aysha H  & Saaida
S - both List members) - ensuring that the names came in on time, was done by Rohina Diedericks, another Black Belt.

Other work, like ensuring Refereeing and Table Officials training, etc. and seeing to its implementation on the day was done by other Dan grades. I am fortunate to have a great team. They are young in age and still need some experience, but we are getting there and looking at the tight control of Saturday - we are much more developed than most other Organisations.

A glitch that we had was that we started the March Past without music - the student detailed to see to that "forgot" to bring the Music System with.  He did go home to get it as we used it for the Musical Kata which had the crowds enthralled. Can't offhand think of others.

The championships was opened by Leon Beech, Chairperson of the Karate Assoc. WP and a Exec member of both KASA and the African Federation. Dignitaries in attendance included Peter Klipfel (Goju Kai), Johan Roux (Karate Zen), Malcolm Lamour (ShinBudo Kai), Fazel Mohammed (Shotokan), Andre de Vries (Shotokan), Henry Paulse (ShindoRyu) and many many others.

Divisions included Kata, Musical Kata, Weapons Kata, Clicker Kumite & Knock Down. In the Sabaki Challenge (the Knock Down Division) we had four knock outs. The level of fighting was not bad.

Overally a super event made possible by the wonderful people who attended.
