Guidelines for Dan Grades

1. The applicant must have attended at least one gasshuku at Honbu.

2. Please note that no allowance will be made for previous injury.

3. Dan degrees are a ranking system covering all aspects of Ashihara Karate and are awarded only when a suitable balance is produced by the aspiring student. This balance is produced from elements of physical, mental and spiritual outlooks. The final assessor remains the Kaicho.

4. Any student wishing to apply for any Black Belt grading must produce a letter of approval from his or her senior instructor.

5. A formal written essay examination is required for each Dan promotion. Those applicants who pass the technical ability test will receive examination questions directly from Honbu. Completed examination papers will be evaluated by the Kaicho or the Black Belt Committee. No promotion test will be considered complete unless both the physical and written tests have been passed.

6. Any student applying for a Dan grading will be fully tested for an increase in stamina as in previous grading, plus his or her ability to perform all basic techniques fully.

7. It is expected of the applicant to have completed a minimum of 50 hours teaching time between Dan grades.
